The Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV) (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution) is Germany's federal security agency.1
History
In 1954, the first head of the BfV, Otto John, turned up in East Berlin, denouncing West German remilitarisation. He re-defected the following year, claiming to have been drugged and kidnapped. He was nevertheless convicted and imprisoned as a traitor.2
