The Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) is the foreign intelligence service of the Federal Republic of Germany (ref 1).

The BND was formed in 1956 on the basis of the Gehlen Organisation controlled by former Wehrmacht intelligence officer Reinhard Gehlen, who remained as head until 1968 (ref 2, p.136).
