Martin Jäger (alternatively spelled Jaeger) has been president of Germany's BND intelligence service since September 2025. He is not a career intelligence officer, but his wide-ranging career in the German public service has included a number of crisis management roles.
A member of the Christian Democratic Union since 1994, Jäger served as spokesman for finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble during the euro crisis, and has held diplomatic postings abroad as ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine. His appointment as BND chief comes as the CDU-led coalition government seeks to significantly expand the service.
