The Rome station of the Secret Intelligence Service has historically been an important posting, often used for running third-country operations into Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

First World War

A formal intelligence mission to Italy, then a British ally in the First World War, was established in June 1916.1 The following month, the Foreign Office agreed to fund a Military Control Office in Rome as part of a network of cover positions for the foreign branch of the Secret Service Bureau.2
