The most famous Soviet spy network in Japan was run not by the KGB but by military intelligence. GRU officer Richard Sorge operated in Tokyo from 1930 until his arrest in 1941.1

The NKVD/NKGB was represented for much of the Second World War by Grigori Dolbin.2
