Heribert Hellenbroich was briefly president of the German foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), in August 1985 (ref 1).
He was forced to resign almost immediately after his appointment when a long-standing close subordinate defected to East Germany (ref 2).
Hellenbroich had previously served as head of the federal security agency, the BfV, from 13 May 1983 to 31 July 1985 (ref 3).
